Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can be a highly effective way of calming phobias and irrational fears.
The reassuring news is that the brain is always capable of learning and adapting. Just as we develop habits over time, we can also develop new, healthier patterns. Phobias exist at a subconscious level — the same level where habits are formed. Through hypnosis, we work directly with that part of the mind, helping it create calmer, more balanced responses.
At its core, a phobia is often a conflict between the conscious and subconscious mind. Consciously, you may know there is little real danger. Yet subconsciously, the fear response feels immediate and powerful. Hypnotherapy helps align these two systems, gently updating the subconscious so it responds in a way that reflects how you want to feel — not how you have been reacting.
A phobia is typically defined as a persistent and excessive fear of a specific object or situation. The reaction is often disproportionate to the actual threat, and sufferers usually recognise that the fear feels irrational — yet it still triggers a strong physical response.
When faced with the feared situation, you might feel the urge to run, freeze, feel nauseous or become tearful. These reactions are driven by the primitive “fight, flight or freeze” response — the brain trying to protect you.
Phobias generally fall into two categories:
Simple phobias involve fear triggered by a specific object or situation — such as dentists, needles, spiders, dogs, flying or storms. The anxiety usually occurs when confronted with the trigger.
Complex phobias tend to involve ongoing anxiety that extends beyond a single moment. For example, emetophobia (a fear of vomiting) can influence daily life in significant ways — affecting choices about work, parenting or even pregnancy. Social phobia, or social anxiety, can make situations such as public speaking, weddings or even informal gatherings feel overwhelming. Often, the underlying fear is of embarrassment or humiliation.
The good news is that fear responses are learned — and what is learned can be unlearned.
Through Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, we reduce overall anxiety levels and help your mind develop new, calmer patterns of response. As anxiety decreases, confidence naturally increases.
I have worked with people of all ages to overcome fears ranging from spiders and dogs to storms, swimming and public speaking. There is no reason to remain restricted by fear.
Change is entirely possible — and often much quicker than people expect.
