Panic Attacks

Panic attacks can feel overwhelming and frightening. Many people describe them as sudden, intense and completely out of control. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is designed to reduce anxiety levels and help you regain a sense of calm and control.

Panic attacks can include symptoms such as hot or cold sweats, a racing heart, tightness in the chest, stomach discomfort, dizziness or a feeling of impending danger. In more intense cases, people can feel as though they are having a heart attack. These symptoms occur when the body activates the fight, flight or freeze response — your built-in survival system.

This response is not harmful in itself. It is the same mechanism that protects you in genuinely dangerous situations. The difficulty arises when the brain misinterprets stress as threat. When anxiety builds to a high level, the “alarm system” can trigger even when you are not in danger.

Sometimes anxiety rises gradually over time, which is why a panic attack can appear to come “out of nowhere.” Once one has occurred, the brain may become sensitised. Sights, sounds, smells or situations associated with the first episode can then trigger further attacks. This can understandably lead to avoidance behaviours and, in some cases, more complex anxiety patterns such as agoraphobia.

It is important to know that experiencing a panic attack at some point in life is common. Many people will encounter intense anxiety during stressful events such as interviews, exams, public speaking or major life changes. The problem is not the response itself — it is when the alarm system becomes overly sensitive.

In therapy, we work to lower overall anxiety levels so that the nervous system becomes less reactive. As stress reduces, panic attacks lose their intensity and frequency.

Simple but powerful tools — such as controlled breathing and physical relaxation — play an important role. Deep, steady breathing and consciously relaxing areas like the shoulders and jaw send a clear signal to the brain that you are safe. Over time, this retrains the “faulty fire alarm” and restores a sense of control.

There are various approaches to managing panic and anxiety, from medical support in more severe cases to therapeutic interventions such as hypnotherapy. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps you understand what is happening in your mind, reduce overall stress and develop confidence in your ability to stay calm.

The aim is not to eliminate your survival instinct — it is to help it respond appropriately. With the right support, panic attacks can become manageable and, for many people, fade away altogether.
